Since there are no parks within walking distance from our house we are lucky enough to have an elementary school just a short walk down the road. The boys love to go play on the "Spiderman playground" as it is red and blue with webs to climb and many fun features. However, we have to wait until later in the day when school is out to visit it. We decided to go for a quick romp to the school today, to play before dinner. The boys wanted to take their bikes.

Usually, bikes are faster than walking and they have to stop to wait for all to catch up. But, that was not the case for my boys today. Caleb on his bike, Jacob on his Big Wheel, and I on foot headed out the door. I know the boys are little but I was the one taking a leisurely stroll down the road stopping, standing, waiting, for them to keep up. Good thing Caleb's bike has training wheels because as slow as he was pedaling the bike would have long ago tipped over.

Jacob on the other hand would pedal a few rounds and then stop get off the trike poke in the dirt, get back on, pedal another round, stop check out the bushes, pick something off the ground, examine it, ask questions, get back on, go another round, stop in front of a house, people watch for a minute - a long minute. Much encouragement to get to the playground was wearing on me. At this rate we may never get there and our play time was shortening. So yes, we eventually make it there. Within, two minutes, Caleb says "I have to go potty". Now there are no bathrooms on the school grounds and the building is locked. "We have to go home!" So what else to do but head back the way we came with much complaint from Jacob. So once again a short walk becomes a dreaded path with so many distractions. Maybe we will make it before sundown!

My problem typically involves Audrey running AWAY from me and/or Ben. Going out is really exciting for her. She knows what we're talking about when we tell her we're going to put on her shoes and when we say "Are you ready to go bye-bye?" she heads for the door and tries to turn the knob...
You are DOOMED, Emily! Joshua would just run away all the time..he still does. DRIVES ME CRAZY! I think I would have eaten my children with all the stopping, Tammy! Kudos to you for being patient. I think I need to learn a few lessons in being tolerant!
When I go walking with The Knight, I have to be patient too. He complains about his rusty joints, the rusty [aka "boring"]neighborhood, or that I am walking too fast. Needless to say, the last neighborhood walk we went on was in May.
"nflsheuy" = how the Knight drags his heels
Sounds just like my little family. Parks on his training wheel bicycle and Logan on the bigwheel. And yes they are usually speed demons until you want to get someplace. Hudson on the other had takes off and leaves us all. I walk near Parks because I'm afraid he'll tip and he's not quick enough to put his foot down and catch himself. If he ever gets really hurt, he'll never get on his bike again.! Logan the daredevil picks up Huds bike and tries to ride it without training wheels. It falls over and pins him everytime. But he doesn't catch on.
He's more ready for training wheels than Parks. We have a little bike I bought at the swap meet for $5 but the tires are flat and we never got them fixed. He could have been riding it this summer. I never even got out my trailor to pull behind my bike this year! :(
